In a joint announcement between OXXO and Chubb insurance, OXXO will begin selling temporary auto insurance for Mexican-plated cars traveling into the United States. Now people crossing into the US can stop in at an OXXO store to purchase a temporary car policy (FEMSA press release, 21 February 2023: the product covers third-party liability, medical expenses for occupants, roadside assistance and legal defence, can be bought for days, weeks, months or up to 365 days, and is activated by phone or on Chubb's website with the code printed on the store receipt).
Just as driving in Mexico calls for a Mexican policy (Baja Bound's FAQ says US and Canadian insurance is not considered proof of financial responsibility under Mexican law), a Mexican auto insurance policy is written for Mexico, so drivers heading north look for a US policy to drive in the USA.
Chubb Seguros is one of the two insurers that our partner BajaBound names on its auto page, alongside HDI Seguros.
If you are going the other direction and driving from the United States into Mexico, vehicles on Mexican federal roads must carry third-party liability insurance (Ley de Caminos, Puentes y Autotransporte Federal, art. 63 Bis); a Mexican car insurance policy covers that, and SmartGringo can help!
