About
Editorial Standards
SmartGringo writes about insurance products that affect real money and real travel decisions. We take the editorial process seriously because the people reading us deserve accurate information, not affiliate-driven spin. This page documents how we work.

Effective date:
How we research
Every insurance product page on SmartGringo is researched against three sources: the actual policy documents from our partner providers (Baja Bound Insurance Services, IMG Global, Travel Medical Insurance Network), publicly available regulatory information from Mexican insurance authorities, and direct experience from staff and contributors who live in or travel regularly to Mexico. When sources disagree, we err toward the policy document language and note any practical differences.
How we write
Articles are drafted, reviewed for accuracy, and edited for clarity before publishing. We avoid industry jargon where plain language works. We don’t pad word counts to game search engines. Where a topic is genuinely complex (claim processes, coverage exclusions, regional rules), we go long; where it’s simple, we keep it short.
How we update content
Every money page on this site shows a “Last reviewed” date near the top. That date reflects the last time a member of the editorial team substantively reviewed the page against current information from our partners and regulators. Blog posts show a “Last updated” date when material changes have been made. We don’t update timestamps cosmetically.
Source hierarchy
For factual claims about Mexican insurance, we prioritize sources in this order:
- Current policy documents and rate sheets from our affiliate partners
- Mexican federal and state insurance regulators (CNSF, CONDUSEF)
- U.S. and Canadian consular guidance for travelers and expats abroad
- Established travel and expat publications with editorial standards
- Direct experience from people living, traveling, or doing business in Mexico
Forum threads, social media, and content farms are not sources we cite.
Conflict-of-interest disclosure
SmartGringo earns affiliate commissions when readers purchase insurance through partner referral links. This is disclosed on every product page, in our Affiliate Disclosure, and in our Terms of Service. Our editorial process does not weigh providers by commission size — partners on this site were chosen because they cover travelers and expats well, not because they pay the most. We do not run paid placements, sponsored articles, or “advertorial” content disguised as editorial.
Accuracy and corrections
If you find an error or outdated information on the site, please contact us. We review correction requests within five business days and either update the page (with the “Last updated” date bumped) or explain why the existing content stands.
