Retiring to Mexico – It's all about quality of life

Many people choose to live out their retirement in Mexico. Whether you decide to live in Mexico full-time or part-time, there are many reasons to come.

Healthcare

Many retirees look at healthcare costs and insurance as part of the decision. Costs for routine medical visits and medications depend on where you live and what your needs are. The US State Department's Mexico advisory says: "We highly recommend that you buy travel insurance before you travel" (advisory); for a longer stay, see the travel health insurance page for the plans SmartGringo links to.

Food

Taco shops and other taquerias in Mexico often cook the meat, make fresh tortillas, and add fresh vegetables as you wait. Most cities have open markets where vendors sell fresh foods.

Climate

Mexico has a variety of climates to choose from. If you enjoy the warm weather, Mexico has miles of beautiful beaches to choose from. If you like cooler climates, there are higher mountainous towns you can live, such as San Miguel de Allende. If you love humidity, Mexico’s South-East states are for you.

Housing

Housing costs vary a lot by city, so research the town you are considering.

Overall Quality of Life

Many retirees are drawn by the people, the pace of life, and the chance to make new friends and have new adventures.
