Mexican Motorcycle Insurance: The Medical-Payments Gap Riders Miss

Adventure motorcycle loaded with aluminium panniers and a dry bag, parked on the shoulder of an empty desert highway. Mexican motorcycle insurance for riders.

A motorcycle needs its own Mexican insurance policy. A car policy does not extend to it, and neither does the policy on the truck or RV towing it — anything self-propelled has to be insured in its own right. The difference riders most often miss is narrower and more expensive than that: Mexican motorcycle policies exclude medical payments for the driver and passengers, where the equivalent car policy includes them. Your own injuries are not on the bike's policy.

That is not a small print detail. It is the single largest gap between what a rider assumes they bought and what they actually bought.

The policy is on the vehicle, not on you

Mexican insurance attaches to a vehicle. Anyone with a non-Mexican licence, over 21, with your permission, is covered to ride the insured bike — but the cover follows the bike, not the rider. Two bikes means two policies. A bike and a truck means two policies.

This catches three groups every season:

  • Riders trailering in. The bike on the trailer behind the truck is not covered by the truck's policy. A trailer that is not self-propelled picks up liability-only cover while it is being towed; the motorcycle sitting on it does not.
  • Riders in a group who share a chase vehicle. The support truck's policy covers the support truck.
  • Riders who added the bike to a US policy with a Mexico rider. A US endorsement is supplemental. It does not satisfy the Mexican legal requirement for cover from a Mexican-licensed insurer.

What the motorcycle policy includes

Mexican motorcycle insurance is a distinct product, not a car policy with a different vehicle typed into it. What it carries:

  • Cover for US, Canadian and other non-Mexican registered bikes
  • Terms by the day, up to a full year
  • Liability-only or full coverage
  • Up to $1,000,000 in third-party liability
  • 24/7 legal assistance and bail bond
  • 24/7 roadside assistance and towing
  • Uninsured motorist property damage, on full coverage policies
  • Claims paid at US and Canadian repair rates, in US dollars where possible

The bail bond and the 24/7 legal line matter more on a bike than they do in a car. At any accident scene in Mexico both parties stay until police and the adjuster arrive, and that conversation goes differently when someone is answering the phone in Spanish on your behalf.

The exclusion, stated plainly

Medical payments for the driver and passengers are excluded.

A car policy in this market includes medical payments — the driver and passengers of the insured vehicle get medical cover after an accident. The motorcycle product does not. If you come off the bike outside Vizcaíno, the bike's policy handles what you did to other people and their property. It does not handle you.

What covers you is travel medical insurance, which is a separate product and cheap relative to the exposure. If you are riding down for a week, travel medical cover is the piece that fills this specific hole. I would not ride Baja without it, and the reason is this exclusion rather than anything general about Mexico.

Race weekends and unpaved routes

Baja's calendar puts a lot of riders on course sections that are not roads. Some Mexican policies exclude damage sustained on unpaved event routes, so a policy that covers you perfectly well on Highway 1 may not cover you on a marked race course during an event. If your trip is built around a race weekend, read that term specifically rather than assuming the general policy carries.

What it costs

Motorcycle pricing follows the same levers as car pricing — declared value, coverage tier, liability limit, deductible, and territory. A bike declared at $12,000 prices differently from one declared at $30,000, so the published price index for a mid-value car is the shape rather than your figure. The quote returns your real number before payment.
