Temporary Mexican Car Insurance 2026: 1-Day, Weekend, and Trip Coverage Explained

By Scott Tobin · · 4 min read

Temporary Mexican car insurance covers you for a specific short trip into Mexico — 1 day, a weekend, a week, or anything up to about a month. It's designed for tourists, weekend travelers, and occasional Baja crossers who don't need an annual policy.

I live in Rosarito and this is the workhorse product for most Americans going to Baja. Here's what you need to know before you buy.

When to buy temporary vs. annual

Buy temporary (1 to 30 days) if you cross 1-3 times per year, your trips are less than 30 days each, you're testing whether you want to travel to Mexico more regularly, or you need coverage for a specific trip you already have booked.

Buy annual instead if you cross 4+ times per year, have a vacation property in Baja, are a part-time Baja resident, or cross even a few times per year with trips that are 2+ weeks each.

The math on the crossover point: an annual policy is roughly $300-350/year. Individual short trips average $50-100 each. If you're going more than 4-5 times per year, annual wins.

Real prices for temporary policies (2026)

For a mid-value vehicle ($20,000-$40,000), full coverage tier, Baja Only: 1-day $18-25, 2-day $30-40, 3-day $40-55, 4-day $50-70, 5-day $60-85, 7-day $75-105, 10-day $100-140, 14-day $130-180, 21-day $170-230, 30-day $200-280.

Liability-only policies are roughly half these prices. Nationwide (all of Mexico) policies are 15-25% more than Baja Only.

Prices scale up with vehicle value. A $70,000 SUV costs more to insure than a $20,000 sedan. If you have a higher-value vehicle, expect the top end of the ranges above or 20-30% higher.

The 1-day policy

The 1-day policy is one of Baja Bound's best-selling products. Real use cases include day trips to Rosarito or Ensenada for lunch and back, meeting family at the border and driving in briefly, emergency errands across the border, and trying a new restaurant or spa in Tijuana.

A 1-day policy runs $10-25 for most vehicles with basic full coverage. It's less than a Baja Bound service fee at the border booth.

A 1-day policy covers you for 24 hours from the start date/time you choose. If you're crossing at 8am, buy the policy for that day. If you're crossing at 10pm and returning the next morning, you may need a 2-day policy.

The weekend policy

For Friday-Sunday or Saturday-Sunday trips, most people buy a 3-day policy. A 3-day full coverage Baja Only policy runs $40-55; a 4-day policy runs $50-70.

If you're leaving Friday morning and returning Sunday evening, that's technically 3 days. If you're leaving Friday evening and returning Sunday evening, still 3 days. Add a day if you're crossing early Monday morning.

The 7-10 day trip policy

For a full week or slightly more, buy a 7-day or 10-day policy. A 7-day full coverage Baja Only policy runs $75-105 ($11-15/day). A 10-day policy runs $100-140 ($10-14/day).

Versus buying seven 1-day policies which would be $126-175. Longer trip lengths give you meaningfully better per-day rates.

What temporary policies cover

Standard full coverage tier includes liability (damage to other vehicles and injuries to other people), collision (damage to your own vehicle in an accident), theft (vehicle theft and vandalism), medical payments (medical costs for you and passengers in the vehicle), and roadside assistance (towing, jump-starts, tire changes).

Baja Bound and other reputable brokers also typically include legal aid coverage — a Mexican attorney if you're in serious accident — and travel assistance — help finding hotels, rental cars, translation if you're stranded.

What temporary policies don't cover

Not covered: wear and tear on your vehicle, damage caused by DUI, damage while the vehicle is being used for commercial purposes, damage from natural disasters (earthquakes, floods) in some policies, racing or off-road activities, and damage while the vehicle is being driven by someone not listed on your policy.

Read the fine print of any policy before you buy. Baja Bound provides plain-English summaries of what's covered and what's excluded before you complete purchase.

Extending a temporary policy

If your trip runs longer than expected, you can usually extend a temporary policy online. Do it BEFORE the original policy expires — extending after the fact is complicated or impossible.

Baja Bound and most brokers let you extend a policy from your account dashboard. Adding a few days to a 7-day policy is usually seamless.

Choosing between brokers

The main US-licensed brokers selling temporary Mexican auto insurance are Baja Bound (focus on Baja California crossings, been in business 25+ years, strong claim service reputation among Baja regulars), Mexpro (broad Mexican insurance, competitive pricing, less Baja-specialized), Progressive Mexican (part of the Progressive family, easy purchase, sometimes higher prices), and Sanborn's (longest-established Mexican insurance agent since 1948, strong on mainland Mexico).

For Baja crossings, most experienced travelers default to Baja Bound. For mainland Mexico trips, Sanborn's and Mexpro are both solid.
