How Much Does Mexican Car Insurance Cost in 2026? Real Prices by Trip Length and Coverage

Mexican car insurance prices in 2026 range from about $10 for a single day of basic liability coverage to over $400 per year for full coverage on a higher-value vehicle. But the specific number depends on four factors: how long you're going for, what type of coverage you pick, your vehicle value, and where in Mexico you're driving.
I live in Rosarito and buy Mexican auto insurance policies through Baja Bound regularly for family and friends coming down. What follows is real pricing based on actual quotes I've pulled in the last 30 days, plus the pattern of what people typically end up paying.

For a typical mid-value vehicle ($20,000-$40,000 vehicle value) with liability + collision + theft (the standard full coverage tier), you're looking at $18-25 for a single day, $30-40 for two days, $40-55 for three days, and $75-105 for a full week. Per-day rates drop as trip length increases.
Liability-only policies (bare minimum required by Mexican law) cost significantly less — roughly half the full-coverage numbers above. But most experienced Baja drivers don't buy liability-only for a real trip, because if you get in a serious accident and don't have coverage for your own vehicle, you can be stranded and out thousands of dollars.
Monthly and annual pricing
For extended trips or full-time expats: a 1-month policy runs $60-90, a 3-month policy $130-180, a 6-month policy $200-280, and an annual policy $300-420.
Annual policies work out to roughly $25-35 per month, which is the cheapest per-day cost you can get. If you're crossing more than once a month, or living in Baja part-time, the annual policy pays for itself in three or four short trips.
What drives the price up or down
Vehicle value is the biggest factor. A $50,000 SUV costs more to insure than a $15,000 sedan because the potential payout is larger. Baja Bound quotes generally scale linearly with declared vehicle value.
Coverage limits matter next. Standard liability limits are around $300,000 combined single limit. If you want $500,000 or $1 million liability limits (recommended if you're crossing into Mexico with significant personal assets to protect), the premium goes up 15-30%.
Coverage type — basic liability, liability + collision, or full coverage (liability + collision + theft + medical + roadside) — each step up adds cost. Higher deductibles ($1,000-2,500) lower your premium.
Geographic scope: Baja Only policies are cheaper because Baja is considered lower-risk than mainland Mexico. If you're only driving in Baja California, this can save you 20-30%.

You can buy Mexican car insurance at booths at the border for cash. It's usually more expensive than buying online from a broker like Baja Bound, and the coverage quality is often lower.
Border booth pricing typically runs $25-35 for a 1-day liability policy or $30-50 for 1-day full coverage. Broker-issued policies for the same day and same coverage are $10-15 (liability) or $18-25 (full coverage).
Border booths mark up because they can — you're at the border, you need coverage before you cross, they have leverage. Buying ahead of time online is dramatically cheaper.
What US and Canadian drivers get wrong about the price
Your US or Canadian policy does not extend into Mexico. Mexican law requires Mexican-licensed liability coverage from a Mexican insurer. Your US insurer may offer some coverage in Mexico for a fee (usually a few dollars per day for basic liability), but this is not the same as a proper Mexican policy and doesn't meet the legal requirement.
Skipping insurance for a short trip is a mistake. If you get in any accident in Mexico without insurance, you can be detained at the scene while the situation is sorted out. Vehicle impoundment is common. Even minor fender benders can turn into legal trouble. The $10-25 for a day policy is nothing compared to hiring a Mexican lawyer to get you and your vehicle out.
Border booth insurance is sometimes fine, but border booth policies often have low liability limits, high deductibles, and geographic restrictions (only Baja, only within 50km of border) that don't match what you actually need. Reading the fine print at a border booth at midnight is not a good experience.
The cheapest way to buy
For occasional trips (fewer than 6 crossings per year): buy short-term policies as needed through a broker. Baja Bound quotes are usually competitive with other online brokers, and their claim service is well-regarded among Baja regulars.
For frequent travelers or part-time expats: an annual Baja Only policy for $300-350/year is usually the best value if you cross more than 3-4 times per year.
For full-time residents driving Mexico-plated vehicles: local Mexican insurance is a different market with different pricing — brokers like Baja Bound primarily serve US/Canadian-plated vehicles crossing the border.
