Sonora Only vs Baja Only Mexican Car Insurance 2026: Which One Covers Rocky Point?

By Scott Tobin · · 5 min read

Last updated:

Sonora Only Mexican car insurance covers Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco). Baja Only Mexican car insurance does NOT. These two policy types sound similar but cover completely different parts of Mexico, and buying the wrong one for a Rocky Point trip leaves you legally uninsured despite paying for a policy.

This is the single biggest Mexican insurance mistake I see Arizona drivers make. The names are confusingly similar, both are cheaper regional policies, but they don't overlap at all.

The short answer

Rocky Point / Puerto Peñasco = Sonora. Buy Sonora Only or Nationwide coverage.

Baja California + Baja California Sur (Rosarito, Ensenada, La Paz, Cabo) = Baja. Buy Baja Only or Nationwide coverage.

The two states are on opposite sides of the Sea of Cortez. A Baja Only policy does not extend across the water to Sonora. A Sonora Only policy does not extend across the water to Baja. Nationwide covers both plus the rest of Mexico.

What Sonora Only actually covers

Sonora Only Mexican car insurance covers the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. This includes:

  • Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) — the main destination for US drivers
  • Sonoyta — border town at Lukeville crossing
  • Caborca, Hermosillo, Guaymas, Nogales (Mexican side)
  • The entire Sonora corridor between Lukeville and Rocky Point

Sonora Only policies typically also include the Sonora corridor exemption that lets US visitors drive to Rocky Point without a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP).

What Baja Only actually covers

Baja Only Mexican car insurance covers the two Baja states in the Baja California peninsula:

  • Baja California (northern state): Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, Valle de Guadalupe, Mexicali, Tecate, San Felipe
  • Baja California Sur (southern state): Guerrero Negro, Loreto, La Paz, Todos Santos, Cabo San Lucas

The entire peninsula from the US border down to Cabo is covered.

Baja Only does NOT cover any part of mainland Mexico, including Sonora. Rocky Point is in Sonora. A Baja Only policy does not apply to Rocky Point trips.

Real pricing comparison

For a mid-value vehicle ($20,000-$40,000), full coverage tier, 3-day weekend:

  • Sonora Only: $42-58
  • Baja Only: $40-55
  • Nationwide (covers both): $50-70

Pricing is nearly identical between Sonora Only and Baja Only. Neither is meaningfully cheaper than the other. The choice is entirely about where you're going, not about saving money.

Nationwide is 15-25% more expensive than either regional policy but covers you if plans change or if you want maximum flexibility.

Why the confusion happens

Both policies are marketed as "cheaper regional coverage vs Nationwide." Both are commonly recommended for US visitors doing single-destination trips. The names sound similar. And most US brokers offer both as separate products.

But they're completely non-overlapping. Sonora Only doesn't cover a single mile of Baja. Baja Only doesn't cover a single mile of Sonora.

The confusion is amplified by online searches. Someone Googling "cheap Mexican car insurance for Rocky Point" may see Baja Only policies advertised at competitive prices and assume they work. They don't.

Which one for what trip

Rocky Point / Puerto Peñasco trips (any duration): Sonora Only or Nationwide.

Rosarito, Ensenada, or any Baja California trip: Baja Only or Nationwide.

La Paz, Cabo, Todos Santos (any Baja California Sur trip): Baja Only or Nationwide.

Combined trip: Rocky Point + Baja destinations in the same journey: Nationwide required. Neither regional policy covers both.

Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, or any other Mexican mainland destination: Nationwide required.

San Diego resident occasional Baja trips + occasional Rocky Point trips: Two separate regional policies for different trips, or one annual Nationwide policy that covers both.

The verification test before you buy

Before you complete your Baja Bound (or other broker) purchase, verify the policy explicitly covers your destination:

  1. Look at the coverage area description on the quote page. It should name Sonora, or Baja California, or "Nationwide / all of Mexico."
  2. If unsure, ask customer service directly. Baja Bound and other brokers will confirm coverage areas in writing.
  3. Never assume "Mexico coverage" means "all Mexico." Regional policies exist specifically because they exclude parts of the country.

For Rocky Point specifically: verify the policy shows Sonora OR shows "Nationwide" coverage. If it shows Baja California without mentioning Sonora, the policy will not cover Rocky Point.

What happens if you buy the wrong policy

You still legally have no coverage for Rocky Point trips. In an accident or traffic stop:

  • Police verify insurance against the actual coverage areas, not against the fact you have "some" Mexican policy.
  • Baja Only policies for Sonora incidents get treated the same as no policy at all.
  • Same detention risks, same vehicle impoundment risks, same personal liability exposure.

Some brokers may refund an incorrect regional policy if you catch it before the coverage period starts. After the coverage period begins, refunds get complicated.

What about Nationwide

Nationwide Mexican car insurance covers all of Mexico, including both Baja states and Sonora and everywhere else. It's the safest choice for any trip and the only choice for multi-region trips.

Cost is roughly 15-25% more than either regional policy. Worth the premium if:

  • You're going to more than one region on the same trip.
  • You're not 100% sure your route stays in one region.
  • You value maximum flexibility over minor cost savings.

For strictly single-region trips (Rocky Point-only or Baja-only), the regional policies save some money without sacrificing coverage where you're going.
